Essential Guidance - Internet Connectivity

Internet Connectivity

ADSL

  • Broadband through an analogue (PSTN) telephone line
  • Asymmetric upload/download speeds – may be an issue if extensive upload of data is required.
  • Aimed mostly at “passive” internet users, with little requirement for uploading data
  • Lead time is typically 10 days from order after installation of analogue line

ADSL 2+

  • Fast business broadband
  • “Rate adaptive” – will provide the highest speeds that the underlying line will support
  • Maximum download speed of 24Mb and upload speed of 1Mb (dependent upon distance from exchange)
  • Best suited for passive internet usage
  • Lead time is typically 10 days from order after installation of analogue line

EFM (Ethernet First Mile Line)

  • Direct line connection to exchange (typically copper lines)
  • Symmetrical – same upload and download speeds
  • Uncontended – line not shared with other users
  • Ideal for Voice over IP (VoiP), video conferencing & streaming, and exchange of large data files
  • Lead time typically 30-60 days from order (subject to survey – postcode dependent)

Fibre Leased Lines

  • One-to-one data connection between sites
  • Dedicated, symmetrical, connection
  • SLAs based around guaranteed speed, reliability and security.
  • Lead time typically 90 days from order (subject to survey – postcode dependent)
