Charlton Athletic Women Secure Historic Promotion to the Women’s Super League
Charlton Athletic Women have secured a historic promotion to the Women’s Super League (WSL), marking a significant milestone not only for the club but for women’s football across Southeast London.
In a dramatic play-off final at The Valley on 24 May 2026, Charlton triumphed over Leicester City after a tense 0-0 draw went to penalties. Goalkeeper Sophie Whitehouse delivered an outstanding performance, saving four out of five penalties to seal promotion and write her name into club history.
This achievement caps off an incredible journey for the Addicks, who have rebuilt and grown over recent years to compete at the very highest level of the women’s game. Promotion to the WSL brings increased visibility, with matches broadcast on major platforms such as Sky Sports and the BBC, and signals an exciting new chapter for the club as they prepare to face some of the top teams in the country.

The promotion is particularly meaningful given the team’s history. Nearly two decades ago, the women’s side faced closure, before being rebuilt and eventually re-integrated into the club. Since turning fully professional in 2021, Charlton Athletic Women have gone from strength to strength, now earning their place in the top tier of English football.
